FAQs

What is ADSL?

ADSL, or Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line,  is a broadband connection technology which utilises existing copper wired telephone networks. ADSL uses a wide range of frequencies over an existing telephone line to deliver much higher speeds than your standard 56k modem (between 10 and 140 times faster). It is also possible to use your phone while online.

What speeds does ADSL run at?

Speeds available on ADSL depend on the BT exchange you are connected to and how far you are from it (length of the phone cable – not necessarily as the crow flies). BT exchanges generally provide a service UP TO 24Mbps download speed.

Is ADSL available everywhere?

ADSL is available in nearly all of BT Exchanges. However, the distance from the exchange must be less than a specific figure, and quality of  the copper wiring and connections into the building can affect connectivity and speed.

Why is the download speed greater than the upload speed?

ADSL is Asymmetric which means it runs at different speeds for upload and download.
